Upcycled Tshirt Scarf!

Ok! First real post!

I'm pretty broke, my job is fun but not very lucrative. So I decided to make a few Christmas presents for people this year. I kept seeing tshirt scarves everywhere but couldn't really find one that was 1.) Really easy and no sew, and 2.) Actually looked good ie: not just loose strips of fabric hanging around your neck. So I decided to just come up with my own version of it!

So here you are! A really fast, easy, no sew tshirt scarf just for you!

*What you'll need*
-Scissors (preferably fabric scissors, but really as long as they can cut a tshirt they're fine)-
-A tshirt. I used an extra large one with no side seams that I got at Michaels-
-Beads. I used to wooden ones but you can use whatever you like,
just make sure you can fit a tshirt strip through them.-

Alright, ready go!

After you have your strips all cut out follow the next set of steps!

  1. Hold up all your strips so that they sit nicely together, I added a small necklace part but you don't have to if you don't want to!
  2. Lay your strips on the floor/table/whatever is flat and handy, and take your shorter strips from the upper portion of the tshirt and lay it underneath the strips.
  3. Tie the strip in a knot so that the tail bit is facing inwards. Take a second strip and do the same thing, so that the knots are a few inches apart but wrapping around in opposite directions.
  4. Start wrapping!
  5.  Take a second strip and do the same thing, so that the knots are a few inches apart but wrapping  around in opposite directions.
  6. When your strips meet in the middle tie them in a double knot.
  7. Tuck any extra fabric from your knots underneath the wrapped bit.
  8. You're done! There are no more steps!

This is how I wore mine, but really its pretty versatile and you could wear it a number of different ways!

Thanks for bearing with me on my first tutorial! Let me know if you have any questions.

Awkward intros are the best!

Hello internet!

My name is Mackenzie and this is my attempt at a blog! Hopefully I'll have enough success stories with all the projects floating around in my head to share with you, and hopefully more people than just my mom will read this!

And now, a little about me! I live in the Seattle area, and love it here despite the rain and lack of sun for a good nine months of the year. I'm a barista and have been for about four years now. In my spare time I really like scouring thrift stores (there are six within 5 miles of my house!) for things I can upcycle or just enjoy how they come! I'm a little gun shy with my sewing machine due to breaking my first one two inches in to my first project (turns out it wasn't my fault, I'm still scarred though) so I'm going to try and improve on my sewing skills. I do really appreciate no sew DIY's though so hopefully there will be a ton of those!

Things I like:
-Photography, no but really I take a ridiculous amount of pictures.
-Cameras, obvious due to the love of photography. I am now up to 31 cameras, new and vintage (I might have a serious problem)
-Clothes, I am currently drowning in them at the moment and should probably get rid of some.
-Thrifting for just about anything and everything. Also becoming a problem.
-Rain, what can I say, I'm from the Northwest.
-Making things, all thing. I'm just going to leave that as a general statement, basically if its a project I can throw myself in to I'm probably going to love it.
-Beer, of course! But not just beer, good beer. My friends and I love to travel around to the Washington/Oregon microbreweries.
-Shoes I don't have to tie, I'm lazy.
-Traveling, because who doesn't?
-Good music, duh.
-Coffee, hello...I'm a Seattleite.
-Sunglasses, I have like 20 pairs. Which makes no sense because I don't get to use them that often.
-DIY tutorials, they are fast becoming my favorite thing and are taking up way too much of my free time.
-Doctor Who! Seriously, I'm more than a little obsessed. But even more seriously, just go watch it. You'll thank me...

Things I don't like:
-Heels, I'm 5'10" and have never been able to walk in heels without wobbling or falling over.
-Dresses that are made for people that 5 foot nothing and are basically shirts on me, which is like every dress ever.
-Sitting still for too long, I'm extremely ADD.
-Being uncomfortable for the sake of fashion, so not worth it.
-Clothes that are a million dollars for no reason. I'm talking about you Urban Outfitters.
-Harem pants...just why?
-Only getting two weeks of summer, which definitely happened this year.
-Bad music, duh.
-Clothes that fit me funny due to the fact that I'm shaped like a 12 year old boy...my sister got all the curves, sigh.
-Things that don't turn out the way I want them to. But really who likes that.

Also here a picture of me brandishing a samurai sword in a Christmas sweater for good measure
